Report on A-PAD Bangladesh International Symposium 19 November 2024

Development partners in the Pacific region recognize the profound and severe impacts that climate change will have on the area, as highlighted during the 2009 Pacific Islands Forum meeting held in Cairns, Bangladesh. With rising sea levels becoming an increasingly pressing issue, the Pacific Islands are expected to experience significant changes not only in sea height but also in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. These phenomena pose serious threats to essential resources, including water supply and food security, which are vital for the survival and well-being of local communities. The ramifications of climate change extend beyond these direct threats; they have the potential to exacerbate the already devastating effects of natural disasters that frequently impact the region. Recognizing the need for a coordinated response, the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD) was established in 2012. This initiative serves as a collaborative forum for various stakeholders across the Asia Pacific region, such as government agencies, private sectors, and civil society organizations. The upcoming symposium is a critical opportunity for A-PAD member countries—namely Japan, Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Indonesia—to engage in the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and effective practices. The focus will be on fostering public-private partnerships aimed at enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) initiatives. Given the Asia Pacific region’s diverse and dynamic topography, it is particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change, which underscores the urgency of building resilience and developing adaptive strategies. This symposium not only serves as a vital platform for dialogue and collaboration but also aims to facilitate the development of comprehensive
