Project: Disaster response to Heavy rain in Haor
Dhaka Community Hospital Trust, Community Initiative Society (CIS) and Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management (A-PAD-Bangladesh) jointly organized health camps for the flash floods victims 2017 in Haor areas.
Heavy rainfalls as well as onrush of water from the upstream Meghalaya hills in India have led to the inundation of a vast areas of croplands of Haors and low-lying areas of the northeast. Flood started on 28th March affecting six districts (Sylhet, Moulavibazar, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Netrokona and Kishoreganj) in the north east region. Rising water overflow and breached embankment in many places and inundated vast areas of croplands. It destroyed nearly-ready-for-harvesting boro rice in about 150,000 hectors areas. It was worst flood in the region in past 36 years.
Traders believe the high price of rice is set to continue after recent flash floods in the northeastern wetlands destroyed more than 200,000 hectares of mature Boro paddy, Fish worth have floated away from the fisheries of the area.
Ramnagar village under Teghoria Union of Habiganj Sadar Upazilla is a remote village and one of the worst victims of the flood. To assess the health impact and need of the community DCH Trust, CIS and A-PAD-Bangladesh acted promptly and arranged a health camp in the area on 7th May, 2017. The health camp team consisted of 12 members. More than 600 patients treated and provided medicine and water purification tablet with free of cost. About 2000 people get health education and personal hygiene.
